If
you have ever seen a Western and wanted
to see what it was really like to journey
though such places then Monument Valley
Park is for you. Located on the southern
border between Utah and Arizona, there
is a valley that lies within the range
of the Navajo Nation Reservation near
the town of Goulding. . In the old “Road
Runner” cartoons you would see the
bird and the coyote running through these
remote desert locations with these weird
balancing rocks and ludicrously steep
“pillar” cliffs. There were
pillars and rock-spear formations and
all sorts of things for a coyote tied
to a rocket could slam into. The funny
thing is those weren’t complete
exaggerations, and those strange balancing
rocks do exist in Monument Valley Park.
The large pillar formation are called
“Buttes” and they are basically
formed when a gorge or canyon get so big
it erodes everything except this one piece
of land, which is then further eroded
and shaped by the wind. The buttes are
all stratified, with three principal layers.
The lowest layer is shale, the middle
sandstone and the top layer is shale capped
by siltstone. Some Buttes are so thin
they are like spears, and people call
them “totem poles”.
