Bavaria is a province or “Bundeslander”
in the European country of Germany. It
is just over 70 thousand square kilometres
and has over 11.5 million people living
inside its borders. It is the home of
that most infamous of festivals called
“Oktoberfest”, which has been
celebrated since 1811. Occurring during
the last two weeks of September, its focus
is beer… lots of beer! It is also
famous for its drinking hats.

First
settled by Celtic tribes in the Palaeolithic,
they were assaulted by the Romans who
eventually took over. After the Romans
there was a long era of Christian rule,
which was followed by invasion of the
Franks. Bavaria is rich in history, which
in many ways is the history of the German
people. Many time invasions from the south
would come into Bavaria first due to the
fact that it lies in the southern part
of the country.
