                                         The
Bahamas is an independent nation that
is composed of little more than a string
of archipelagos and islands in the Atlantic
                                        Ocean. Officially known as “the
                                        Commonwealth of The Bahamas”, the
country is located south of Florida and
north of the island nation of Cuba. Heavily
dependent on tourism for its income, the
Bahamas is recognized all over the world
(or at the least to its visitors) as the
living embodiment of paradise. Discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus,
                                        its native inhabitants were exterminated
by Spanish slave traders. Each of these
now vacated islands became a remote home
for any European who was either looking
for a remote place to be themselves or
a location that was out of the public
eye. This last fact was the cause of the
                                        anarchic 'Privateers' Republic' established
                                        by the “pirate” Blackbeard.

  The
Bahamas served as a place for blockade
runners during the American Civil War,
as well as a place to put emancipated
slaves. After World War I the islands
served as a base for American rumrunners,
and served as a high-class hangout for
people who got kicked out of Havana when
                                        Castro closed down Cuba’s nightspots.
The Bahamas gained full independence in
1973. To this day it remains an excellent
place to vacation, relax, and wait for
                                        incoming hurricanes.
