One
of the first places to get going in Las
Vegas was Freemont Street. Some call it
“downtown Las Vegas”, and
others call it “North Las Vegas”
because of its position in relation to
The Strip. Many people familiar with Las
Vegas could get off at the airport, hang
out in the city for weeks, and then leave
without even knowing it is there. This
isn’t surprising since many of the
larger casinos in Vegas don’t give
you any reason to leave the hotel, let
alone leave the Strip. But Fremont Street
does exist and there is plenty to see
and do.
If it’s working, the first thing
you will see on Fremont Street is the
“Fremont Street Experience”.
Closed to anything but foot traffic, the
entire length of the street is covered
with an arched light board. It was designed
to protect people from the sun during
the day and give them a tremendous light
show after the sun goes down. Even without
the “Freemont Street Experience”
the length of the street is quite a place
to see, with most of the “old fashioned”
signs still in working order.
Of
course you can’t have Fremont Street
without the Fremont Hotel and Casino.
Glowing gold and red, this casino is typical
of many of the smaller casinos that line
this area of Las Vegas. With 32,000 square-feet
of gaming space it may sound like a big
place but remember that a place like the
MGM Grand has 171,500 square feet of gaming
and slots. To keep up with the big boys
places like the Fremont have had to change
the rules a little bit to put butts in
the seats. Keep an eye on the rules and
you might find a game that is seriously
worth playing. That and they don’t
have an attitude like you’re a human
cash machine. They are happy to have your
business and happy to let you know it.
